Pug on the Road

We are going on a road trip from Denver to Chicago (15 hours, 1000 miles) and we have decided to take Chip. Chip has been a good traveler on the short trips to the groomer, vet and the pet store and we took him on a 2 hour drive when we went camping; however, I decided that having him more secure in a place that was comfy and that he knew was “his spot” was probably a good way to go for this long trip, so I started shopping dog car seats. There were three items that were important to my search: 1) that the seat had a restraint that would hook from the car’s seat belt to Chip’s harness yet still allow him to change positions, 2) that it was as comfy as his beds at home, and 3) that it was elevated so he could see out the window without having to touch (scratch) the arm rests under the windows. I looked on Amazon and there were many to choose from. I purchased the PetSafe Solvit Jumbo Pet Safety Seat.

I will update this blog after our trip. If you follow Chip on Instagram, you can see how it goes while we are traveling. My hope is that this seat will properly secure Chip as we travel, preventing the possibilities of injuries to him or us, limit the distractions to the driver and keep Chip comfortable.

In addition to a new car seat, I also purchased a Calming Spray by Thunder Spray the same company that makes Chip’s Thundershirt. This spray is drug free. It contains calming pheromones and fragrances of lavender and chamomile. This can be sprayed onto Chip’s car seat or his Thundershirt. It should help to relieve any of the anxieties associated with traveling.
